And now, for today’s post…
Party in white
(a magical evening to celebrate my husband’s 40s)
“It takes a long time to grow young.” ~ Pablo Picasso
This past week-end it was my husband Todd’s 40th birthday and we invited friends over to celebrate. Forty is a wonderful milestone: it represents the middle point of a life, according to statistics, Dante, and the biblical scripts. The one thing we have learned together in this journey is that being, feeling, thinking young is something you learn as you age. It requires strength to let go of the “grown-up” attitude you create for yourself in your 20s and 30s, it takes humbling to return to your childhood innocence, and yes… it does take a long time to become young…
So, for this important date, I wanted to create a special evening for my husband.
Knowing that he likes a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, I organized the party in our garden, setting up 40 tiki torches plus more candles (Ball jars filled with sand and tea-lights), a lounge area with comfortable blankets and pillows, and a good music mix in the background (classic rock, lounge, instrumental).
Carolina BBQ and slaw sliders
Spicy gazpacho shooters with vodka
Crostini with ricotta and home-made tomato-onion jam
Mini-meatballs with sweet chili sauce or mint-jelly sauce
Arancini with fontina cheese and roasted pepper sauce
Olives with cardamom, fennel, lemon, orange and vanilla
Cheese-cake bites with salty caramel sauce and pop-corn
Lemon curd mousse cups with crushed lemon drops
Éclair pyramid with chocolate sauce (birthday cake, long stem candles)
Cinnamon-sugar donut holes with orange zest mascarpone cream
Red and white wines
- White summer night (Vodka, Godiva white chocolate liqueur, half & half)> in honor of Todd
- Classic olive (or dirty)
- Cosmo (Vodka, triple sec, lime, cranberry)
- Screwdriver (Vodka, orange juice)
