Riso al latte (Rice pudding): grandmotherly comfort
| October 17, 2011 | Posted by ameliaps under Italian, rice, sugar, sweets |
My nonna Paola was my refuge when I needed to escape from my home (say, if my parents had way too many guests I could deal with, if I had gotten in a teenage-year altercation or a sibling fight, or if I just was in need of a quiet space, and some warm, comforting listening).… more

Life’s been really crazy for me lately. Work (just wrapped up a long project and starting a new one), kids (birthdays, school, soccer…), and training for a few triathlons. Cooking has not been downgraded at all (even though from the scarcity of my posts lately you might have felt that was the case). However I… more
Breakfast apple popover (and a talk about “ratios” in the kitchen)

Sometimes we get so bored of our breakfast routine in our house, so I try – on occasion – to change it a bit and add a pinch of creativity to get everyone excited, especially if it is a middle of the week day. Yesterday morning I found 3 wrinkled, old-looking, forgotten golden delicious apples in my… more

I am on a Sicily roll (see my recent post on pasta with bottarga). I love that region of Italy, the scenery, the culture, the food, the history, the ingredients, the people. There are some flavors that instantly bring memories of summers back home in Italy for me… These small cookies allow me to time-travel to my childhood. My mother used to make them as the perfect ending for an “all white” summer lunch (which might include a fettuccine timbale with white sauce, a salad of endive,… more

Crostata, which many of you might be already familiar with, is a traditional Italian latticed jam tart. Growing up it was a staple afternoon snack in my home (as well as in many other Italian homes). My mother would bake one with the jam or marmalade of the season (strawberries and blackberries in the spring,… more
